In the industrialised world, people have come to rely almost exclusively on their intellect to discover and produce things – from new planets to smartphones – and it has resulted in some marvellous inventions and scientific breakthroughs. But it is not the whole picture. We humans have another gift: intuition. Intuition, or the sixth sense, enables us to sense things that the intellect cannot, to link to ancient knowledge, to peer beyond the veil of material “reality”. It should not be confused with emotion or instinct, still less with wishful imagining. It requires practice, refinement and is cultivated best in times of silence, learning to listen inside. Our intellect and intuition can work together to explore ancient mysteries and discover profound truths. Two of them – Atlantis and the lost continent of Urantia – are our focus in this article.
The mythical city of Atlantis by Erebus
The story of Atlantis
The story was first told by the Greek Philosopher Plato (c. 424-348 BCE) in his books Timaeus and Critias as a four-sided discussion. He described “a great and wonderful empire”, situated in the Atlantic, with a sophisticated system of waterways arranged in concentric circles. They had been at war with the ancient Athenians but “afterwards there occurred violent earthquakes and floods” and Atlantis sank into the sea. Although some take this as allegorical, within the text itself, one of the participants says it was “not a mere legend, but an actual fact”.
In later centuries, as stories about Atlantis grew, a supposedly “scientific” explanation claimed that it was a myth based on the island of Thera off Greece that suffered a cataclysmic volcanic eruption c.1600 BCE and sunk, despite the fact that Plato clearly places it in the Atlantic. Additionally the layout of Atlantis is quite unlike anything discovered by archaeologists in Thera. With our modern knowledge of the movements of the earth’s crust and our largely undiscovered depths of the ocean, who can say what may be discovered in future years?
That is as far as the intellect can currently take us. What of intuition? I can only describe my own experience, though I have met others with similar stories to tell. It was after an intense healing session when my mind was extremely relaxed and clear that I suddenly caught a glimpse of the opening to a pyramid with light shining from inside. I immediately recognised – I can use no other word – that this was from Atlantis. Intuition brings a knowing that is beyond debate because it is an experience, not an act of faith or belief. We see with our inner senses. So for me, Atlantis is real. But we must all seek the truth for ourselves.
The lost continent of Urantia
We are not always left pondering. In one case, the sixth sense of an esoteric group without any scientific training seems to have been vindicated by later modern geologists. They published a book in the 1930s said to come from a “Higher Source” which spoke of a super-continent, Urantia, and it’s later break up. They stated that it emerged a billion years ago, hundreds of millions of years before the better-known super-continent of Pangea, and way before any scientist at the time believed it was there. It wasn’t till the 1970s that Professor Mark McMenamin discovered the geological evidence that such a continent existed. Of the uncanny connection, he wrote in his book The Garden of Ediacara:
"This amazing passage, written in the 1930s, anticipates scientific results that did not actually appear in the scientific literature until many decades later."
He added cautiously, "Of course I am being selective here in my choice of quotations, and there are reams of scientifically untenable material in The Urantia Book.”
This adds an important caveat that intuition or the sixth sense, is only as good as its user. What it does tell us is that intuition and intellect can work together for the betterment of humankind.
