In last month’s article, we explored why we have come to live in a world where there is enough for everybody but not everybody has enough. Key to this is understanding the need to see our world through the eyes of humanity, all humanity, rather than the narrow focus of one country, religion or community. Global problems need global solutions. So we need to work towards a world where we provide the essentials of life to all, dealing with challenges like climate change, as one people.
How?
The scale of the task may seem so immense that we can easily feel helpless to do to anything significant in making a difference to the future of the planet.
But we can. First of all, there are universal forces at work guiding humanity forwards towards its highest destiny, however dark the road may feel to us now. This is explored in the book Riverlution and we will be looking at this more closely in a future article. But for now let us focus on how we can participate in this process.
We need to understand that because we are all connected, it means that everything we do has a consequence for the planet as whole. For we are not just connected in an economic or environmental sense, or in our shared humanity, we are connected spiritually, in subtle ways that mean that each life impacts on all lives. If we heal something in our own lives, someone on the other side of the planet, who we shall never meet, whose name we shall never know, will feel a pain lessened; if we free ourselves from the slavery of an addiction, someone else, unknown to us, will be strengthened in their struggle for freedom; above all, everything we do with love will bring silent blessings to so many lives. This is the power we have been given, the power to heal the world. And for this we do not need to be rich or famous. We just need to be willing to do the work.
Hand in hand with this then is the need to heal whatever pain or distress there is in our own lives, not only for our own sakes but so we can more effectively act as channels for light and peace.
We all have our own inner knowledge and resources that can guide us and sometimes the best approaches can be the ones we work out for ourselves. But whatever we do for our own healing, we contribute towards the healing of the whole planet.
Being a Human Being First
Our next step is to expand our consciousness so it embraces all humanity. This means our first loyalty is to humanity, both in the sense of all the humans on this planet and in the sense of kindness, compassion, human decency: a loyalty before country, religion or community. We can come together in a Union of Free Peoples working for the good of all humanity: a union that is not be imposed like the empires of yesteryear, but open for independent democratic nations to join. Germany would still be Germany, Mongolia still Mongolia, but now part of a family of nations, pooling their resources and decision-making for the good of humanity. It would open so many possibilities for us all, save so much suffering and waste, from removing trade barriers to co-ordinating water conservation.
So be whatever and whoever you are, but be a human being first.
